What are your collars and bracelets made of?

Hands up who thought ‘Genuine Leather’ meant the best leather on the market? Well before we began our research for Hobie Collective, we thought that was the case. However, don’t be fooled. Leather is not just leather and the quality of leather differs according to how it is manufactured.

Generally leather goods are stamped to indicate what grade of leather they are usually one of the following 3 grades:

  • Genuine Leather
  • Top-grain Leather
  • Full-grain Leather

What do these grades mean? Well if you are investing in a product made from leather, you should know exactly what to look for in your leather to ensure you purchase a good quality product that will outlast.

Genuine Leather is the lowest quality of all products that are made out of real leather, the goods that you generally come across in department stores.  It consists of several layers of low quality leather (the leftovers of stripping the higher grades) that is bonded together with glue and painted to make it look like higher quality. This type of leather does not tend to last as long as higher grades of leather, nor does it look as nice.

Top-grain leather is then considered to be the middle grade quality of leather and is often used for fine leather goods such as purses or wallets and sold by many well-known designer brands.

Top-grain leather is produced by splitting full-grain leather, sanding away imperfections in the hide and then stamping a fake grain onto it. It is then coloured and treated to give it a completely uniform look.

The durability of top-grain leather and the way in which it ages with use is not as good as full-grain leather.

Now to the good stuff, full-grain leather! This leather is made by using the entire grain of hide, with all the marked and unique imperfections of the animal and its inherent toughness.

Full-grain leather is most used for heavy-duty items such as belts, dress shoes, briefcases and the lovely part about it is that it develops a rich patina (of love) as it ages. This gives the leather good characteristic, looking more beautiful as you use it.

Full-grain leather is widely recognised as the best and highest-quality leather that money can buy. Although this grade of leather is much more expensive, we are committed to using full-grain leather because if taken care of properly, will easily last a life time.

Using this highest quality grade of leather often differentiates Hobie Collective from other companies in our market.

What are your fittings made of?

Most collar fittings that are available on the market are made of brass materials that are limited in colours and shine. We work with zinc alloy metal which is plated in the colours of gold, rose gold, silver and gunmetal black. Our fittings are plated using an eco-friendly process resulting in plating that is lead and nickel-free.

The major benefit of using zinc alloy metal is that it is very lightweight (to avoid unnecessary strain on your dog’s neck) and it does not tend to rust or corrode.

HOW do I purchase a HC Signature Set (collar and bracelet)?

Our selection of Signature Sets are bespoke (made to order) which means you have the fun of designing a set that best matches you and your bestfriend’s style and personality.

  1. Begin by selecting the collar size and information on sizing can be found here.

  2. Then choose which colour leather you would like.

  3. Select the colour of the fittings.

  4. Next, tell us your if you would like to have your dog’s name embossed on their collar. If so, select the colour in which you would like their name embossed (we recommend going with the same colour of the fittings as a nice finish).

  5. Lastly, let us know if you would like your name on your bracelet and in what embossing colour (blind emboss or choose from 4 foil colours)!

It’s simple and you have control of the design allowing you to make your Signature Set as personal as your special bond.
